Iraq is God's plan!

"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God," said Sarah Palin to her congregants on June 8, 2008. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

Hmmm. To hell with the separation of church and state.

ahh, and this comes right on the heels of a speech given by Michelle Bachmann, rep. from Minnesota in which she extolled the virtues of the Republican commitment to keep church and state separate. (see? I'm watching closely this one as well, so you can't say I'm ill-informed). The RNC message seems to be all over the place, contradicting itself at almost every turn. I cannot wait to see in your comments someone from the other side pointing out Cindy and John as diverse-thinking conservatives, evidenced by the adoption of their daughter from Bangladesh. Give me a break.

I'm so tired of hearing that prayer is the answer for everything. If praying makes the pray-er feel better, that's one thing.

To make real things happen you have to, oh I don't know, get off your ass? Sweat a little? Write a check?

Fuck! I have such a headache over all this ...

That's exactly what David told Uriah after he had knocked up Bathsheba.

"Put Uriah in the front line where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die" (verse 15).

2ND Samuel, Chapter 11 (or there abouts)

A task from God? While there are no atheists in the foxhole (trust me, I've been there), we never get a mission statement like:

"2nd Platoon, A Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry attacks in zone to seize Objective O-BRIEN NLT 030800SEPZ08 in order to accomplish a task that has been sent from God."

Just doesn't happen. This sounds like a lot of hyperbole to me, and I hope she doesn't really believe it.

Reminds me of the Blues Brothers ... "we're on a mission from God."

And of course, it comes on the heels of her acceptance speech, in which she led off by talking about her kids...off limits except for when she wants to use them to tout her position.

Erin, you don't actually believe there is some sort of legal "separation" between the government and religion, do you? Cuz, you know, there isn't. Really.
All we have are "non-establishment" clauses. We (the gov't) can't MAKE people believe. And we (the gov't) can't force or support a particular faith. And at the time of said clause, that meant forcing a particular denomination of Christianity. But, the whole thing was written with the belief that most people, um...voting people, thats is, land owning people, you know...white guys were basically all Christian anyway.

We've never had "separation" as it's come to be understood. There's been a long standing American belief that our mission--whether it be taking land from Mohawks or Blackfoot, or enslaving people, or stealing Hawaii--has been God's plan. We might not like her idea, but it certainly isn't new with her.

Now, don't get me wrong: I'm not suggesting we need more of this kind of public display. Just saying, it is very much part of the American tradition.

That said, I understand you concern. The word pious comes to mind...and I don't mean in the good way.

It's all magical thinking -- post hoc ergo propter hoc. . .

Is it dangerous that someone who indulges in delusions could very well end up being in charge of the most powerful military on the face of the earth?

What if President Palin has a nightmare -- say, Russia is about to attack us with missiles -- and decides to act upon her "vision" by bombing Russia? This isn't a ridiculous assertion. Listen to her talk in the video. Her magic, invisible Friend in the Sky can talk directly to her, she believes, and can justify anything she chooses to believe or do.

At least dubya made up WMD, Jonas.

Everyone keeps talking about how charming this woman is. I think she's about as charming as a case of venereal warts.

I don't think he made that up. He was told they were there. Congress believed that data. Hillary believed that data. The UN believed that data.
That Bush used crappy data for his public reasoning just made him extra...um, not good. Not defending him any more that I would the 300 or so public servant who would have likely thought the same thing in the same position. Maybe they just would have been honest about the oil.

Oh well. Can't be undone.
I think your prediction about her withdrawal (unfortunate term, in this case) is interesting...I can see that happening.

Cheer up, the Reps are doing their campaign more harm them non-supporters ever could.

And Obama is just sitting back like a gentleman letting the press do all the work. I hope it lasts.
