Making out, techie-style

On this morning's Today show, Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie goofed around on the Waterfall Swing, and although Clevelander Ian Charnas was there, he didn't say a word.

Really?

Charnas was one of the mightiest forces behind the Waterfall Swing project. Dig him testing it out in Cleveland a couple of years ago:

Ian is also the operations manager at Case Western University's think[box], which is featured in my article for this week's Fresh Water on high-tech making in the 216.

Cleveland never ceases to amaze me, but my findings during the research for this article utterly astonished me. Public access to a 3D microscope? A state-of-the-art laser printer? A petting zoo chock full of today's hottest mobile devices? Yeah, we've got that.

And dig this adjustable crescent wrench, it came out of CWRU's 3D printer with no assembly required. Um ... HEADS UP CRAFTSMAN.

I swear I love this town.

@MR-

Given the consequences of my wasted youth claiming to remember ANY skit from the Radner era of SNL would be dishonest. I did know the "Original" quote, for which there is apparently no confirmation, was "Sometimes a Cigar is just a Cigar"- so I knew the Banana was a substitute but couldn't have said from where.
The funny thing is I apparently had the same visual response to the island as you. I suspect if the regular commentors of the Owners Manual took a Rorschach we'd all be quickly committed for psychosexual rehabilitation.

Okay, so between NBC and YouTube and various and diverse others, sapping my very zest for life, I am ready to smash fragile things with brutal and assymetrical force. So here is what I know: Season 1, episode 15. It was Laraine Newman and not Gilda Radner, but I don't feel bad because a dude on the interwebz said it was Belushi and not Ackroyd. So I'll take the trade.

There's a transcript at a site called 'splitsider'. As I mentioned, NBC seems to have battalions of attorneys on stand-by so over a several hours period this afternoon I was unable to find the sketch on video.

Thanks for the research. Will see what I can find.

Man, those were the days. SNL was so damn funny back then.

The sketch was her as a child talking to her uncle Freud about her dream where all of her cousins were trying to get her to eat their banana. Then she says "but you had the biggest banana of all uncle Freud". To which he replies "sometimes a dream is just a dream"
