First I was freaked out by this, then I found the robot garnered my sympathy. I was rooting for Big Dog as he traversed the rocks and snow. I felt bad for him when he skittered on the ice.
Schlep through the ad and watch this Youtube whatever you do.

Boston Dynamics has another creation out and about; a small-ish robot who walks through snow, mud, ice, tundra, deserts, all kinds of terrain. I love Big Dog, especially when he trots or jumps. But in the end, you know BD is developing this for military purposes. Truth be told, I'd be scared shitless shooting at this thing, especially if it carries rocket launchers, RPGs, etc. Anyway, I want one of these as a pet.
It was amazing to watch--how I felt bad when the guy kicked it.
WHOA!
I really want one of these so I can camp and hike without a backpack. Stupid, stupid back.
I just wonder how noisy they are.
Aw, he is rather endearing once one gets past his resemblance to a fly. It WAS disturbing to watch the man behave so aggressively.
I've seen to many sci-fi movies and TV shows about robots and computers developing emotions ever to kick one. Hal, anybody?
#5 is alive Newton Crosby. Input, I need input.
That's "too". I should kick myself.
Anybody...
We're fucked. Imagine 10 or 20 of these things the size of elephants with weapons.
May The Force be with us.
RJ
Kirk, you sure beat hell out of yourself for typos! We know you know "too" from "to" from "two".
When they come out with one that digs like a badger...
I'm sure the "kick" was a test, but the thing's movements are so damn lifelike--it looks like a recovery because it is. Precisely the point no doubt.
Still .... FREAKY!
LimesNow, I live in total fear of spelling Nazis.
Yes, I went to Catholic school. I know all about it. I, too, make typos and then think, "Oh, they will think I can't spell." A typo is just a typo. That's my mantra!
Add me in with the "won't be as cute after they militarize it" camp. After watching it do its thing for 30 seconds, I kept thinking, "This is how Robocop prolly got started" ...
... oh, I mean HAS GOTTEN started. Coming soon to an interment center near you!
I was amazed watching this, especially how it was able to regain it's footing on ice or snow, and even when kicked.
That noise would drive me crazy after awhile, though.
I agree Big Dog is scary, but I can't help but marvel over the technology behind him.
That's freakin amazing! My jaw has literally dropped. Is that the next Mars rover or what? A new vehicle for the handicapped? Snowy mountain rescue unit? So many possibilities.
