I think you managed to bring the one dimensional into the multi~dimensional with this post. Reading it, I really felt like I was there...seeing what you were seeing, experiencing what you experienced. Your writing always has such a visual element. I love that!
The unpleasant characters and experiences of life help us to be writers. I'm sure being exposed to that at such a young age made you more worldy and observant and able to write about it today.

I think The Sopranos does a reasonable job portraying mobsters. Tony is the most sympathetic character (he has to be, or the series wouldn't work) but there are times when he is revolting. This is well paced throughout the series: just when the audience is comfortable with Tony as a troubled family man in an odd line of business, he does something vile, and we are wrenched back, slapped with the reality of who he is.
I know I've read it before, but I enjoyed your morning drinking story again =)
PS: There is a smoll Mafia growing here in Germany and I#m sure glad I have nothing to do with them.

Somehow I think I, or any wise person, would have trouble remembering anything those guys said too.
Ditto what the capt. says. Thank you for your incisive commentary. Right on that while Pesci's scene is funny, it does not excuse that most of these guys' economic pursuits have a very dark side. No harm no foul well, I've got to call foul because I'm being harassed and worse. I think these guys are still around, and may they not darken your doorstep.
Thugs always believe they are invincible while intimidating peaceful people. They are always surprised when granma shoots em in der face.
Back in my day Shaunder Burns was a name linked to the mafia...I tried to find info on him but to no avail...It was when they hung out down on Short Vincent st...
