I want my MTV?

Bad song, ugly guys, cute chick in overalls:

This was a #1 hit in the UK in 1982. Pass the dutchie, indeed.

What the hell are words for? Surely not this, but Dale Bozzio's legs are unworldly by any standard.

Whatever you do, behold Winter Steele of Liquid Television fame:

Martha Quinn is 52. Nina Blackwood is 68.

Yeah, yeah.

Missing Persons ... Terry Bozzio and Warren Cucurullo of Frank Zappa fame. Bozzio is an incredible drummer ... check out Zappa in New York, and listen to the Black Page. Incredible.

"If no one notices...I think I'll dye my hair blue"

Love that line.

I listened to an interview with Nina Blackwood last week. She sounds 68. But she's still DJing on Satellite Radio from her home in Maine. That's pretty cool.

The Come on Eileen vid made me immediately think of this: http://www.vevo.com/watch/train/hey-soul-sister/USSM20901630

Bad dancing, strange lyrics, similiarly dressed 'characters', bad dancing, pretty girls, street corner band antics...
Maybe Pat Monahan is missing the old MTV days.

Also, What The Fuck? That Winter Steele thing just guaranteed I'll be having nightmares about bad ass biker chick puppets.

Musical Youth's "Never Gonna Give You Up" is a Cuh-lassssic pop song. One more incentive to get a turntable so my vinyl can come out to play.
This is what the interwebs were invented for. Thank you Mr. Gore.

I was very much a rock purist in 1983 or so, and only liked bands with a stripped-down, back-to-basics approach, like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Segar, Tom Petty, etc. Looking back, I wish I hadn't been so narrow-minded. Lot of creativity going on back then. Since so many of those bands were one-hit wonder, that creativity was short lived, but nevertheless, it was refreshing. And of course, music aside, there was a lot of creativity in the videos themselves. Whether I liked the music or not, I remember sitting in front of the set mesmerized, as I watched one amazing (and occasionally confusing) set of images after another.

Nina Blackwood is 68? That puts her in her late '30s in MTVs heyday. She seemed younger. But as I was in my early 20s, my perspective was kind of skewed anyway. Didn't Nina play a hooker in the early '80s grindhouse classic VICE SQUAD? Martha Quinn always seemed to be the most enthusiastic of the bunch. As she was so young, maybe it's because she was new to TV. J.J. Jackson has sadly passed on. May he rest in peace. Actually, I think he was pretty much in peace when he was still alive, as he was the most laid-back of the bunch.

You do Come on Eileen an injustice by calling it a bad song.

It was an exceptionally good bad song.

I will come clean right now.

Not only did I enjoy searching for these songs, I listened to them all of the way through, sometimes more than once.

Eileen and the Missing Persons? Both in my iTunes line-up. And damned if I'm not considering adding Dutchie.

As for Ms. Steele. Who doesn't love a skinny blond biker chick?

As you and I are the same age, we have similar feelings about MTV, I think.

I'm gonna google Hungry like the Wolf now and waste the rest of my afternoon...

Come, on Eileen or, come on, Eileen. Either way, the Dexedrine didn't give those Midnight Runners any staying power.

Erin, you just Kevin Baconed me. The first working writer to give me encouragement? Cintra Wilson, who wrote, played, and kinda looks like Winter Steele.

And hey, Al-the-retired-Army-guy! Every time I hear Zappa make a snotty remark about New Wave, I assume he's referring to Missing Persons. And don't forget Dale Bozzio on Joe's Garage!

I had a strong dose of MTV because I had a colicky baby. The choices on TV in the middle of the night weren't what they are now. I was exposed to some things I loved and some things that made me scratch my head like WTF? This freaks me out. It's not even weird or anything, but it's neo-Pat-Boone squeaky niceness makes me feel strange like there are subliminal messages being transmitted: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ

Looking at the Astley vid, Leslie, it's miracle anyone was having any sort of sex at all. GAWD!

I LOVED Winter Storm. I used to sneak and watch Liquid Television all the time. I was also a fan of Aeon Flux.
