All hail Mother Nature

Can anyone tell me exactly why marijuana is still illegal? I mean, we could really use that tax revenue and (here's a little secret) the people who want to smoke pot are smoking it anyway. I also don't think putting marijuana people (smokers, growers, sellers, etc.) in jail is a good use of my tax dollars.

To all those people who think marijuana is the gateway to crack and heroine and the rest of it? It's not. Don't be dumb. I don't care much for marijuana and I don't use it, but I know enough about it to say that it's not nearly as dangerous as alcohol. People who smoke pot just want to eat nacho cheese Doritos and HoHos. Sometimes they like to screw as well. Who cares?

Maybe now that the U S of A is going broke, people will start thinking outside of the box on this sort of thing. Why lookie here! Seems the good folks of Oakland, CA are already ahead of me on this one.

that would be a progressive initiative and we all know how progressive voters here are. look at all the bool-shit out there re: public option healthcare (which actually SUCKS when you compare it to single-payer option). i wrote to one of the Savvy guys early this morning: sadly i have no faith that any progressive social initiative will ever be enacted in my lifetime, or my kid's. americans want it all, but don't want to pay for any of it. very sad.

When I'm allowed to marry the man I love, it will be only a small leap to the legalization of drugs other than alcohol, nicotine and caffeine; because, according to the popular mind, same-sex marriage will signal the beginning of the end. That's why it's THE issue to resolve ahead of any other.

Tell it sister. America is far to focused on the wrong issues. I've seen more than a few angry, dangerous, ugly drunks. Not once have I seen a stoned individual fighting, screaming, etc

How dare you say something like that, Erin! I'm going to write my congressman and demand he make marijuana and all other recreational drugs AGAINST THE LAW!!!!!

Huh? They're already against the law?

Never mind...

I ain't smoked a joint in damn near 20 years and I still can't find my car keys. Other than that, roll another number.
Get goat to dress up as a muslim homosexual railing against mood altering substances and before ya know it Sean Hannity will be hittin' a bong. Well...maybe not.

(^5 to Swine on that single payor issue. I been sending all the emails from the DNC soliciting funds back with the note BHO has abandoned the left and he can stay that course at his own peril but I'm through donating. No response yet.)

You are so right, Erin. If pot was legalized, taxed, and regulated, we would surely have a budget surplus.

And not only that, the marijuana dispensaries and growers even *want* to be taxed and regulated. They're practically begging for it!

It drives me nuts when people call it a gateway drug or that legalizing it would lead to more crime. Erf!

There is a dispensary just up the street from me. They are the nicest people. It's all very professional and discreet. There's never been any problems, no increase in crime. Yet the Feds have come in and raided them several times. They come in weary full swat gear, guns drawn. They rough up the customers and the owners of the place. They handcuff everybody and make them sit out on the sidewalk while they go in and confiscate all the pot and money. WTF?! What's wrong with *that* picture?!

Anyway....let's hope that Oakland will lead the way. It's so obvious that this is the right thing to do. Even my parents, who are the most conservative people in the world, are for legalizing it! So I guess there is a little spark of hope out there after all.

Oh yeah, almost forgot Most recent issue of "Mother Jones" magazine had a good article on the money pissed away in the war on drugs.
http://www.motherjones.com/toc/2009/07/editors-note

Remember "The War on Drugs" was originally conceived as a cover for black operations designed to destabilize Latin American socialist countries.

HANG OLLIE NORTH!!! ahahahahahahah!

(forgive me, I lost myself for a moment.)

It was also a way of clamping down on the anti-war movement in the 1960s.

For obvious reasons, I am in complete agreement with you, m'lady. For even more obvious reasons, I'm too busy eating garlic/parmesan Cheese-Its and playing golf on the XBox to actually do anything about it.

Legalize it! One more sin tax is what we need. Its beginning to look like we'll be dependent on sinners for our public services.

I heard that and I wanted to bang my head against the wall. I guess all we needed to do was get really broke before getting some common sense.

Of course, for some of us, this only bodes bad things...

my f-ing daily booze intake is a gateway to strangling these mofos who whine and bitch about drugs and the awesomely-effective War on Drugs that has been waged since Ronnie Baby put on his ascot and stepped into Le Ovale Ufficio.

I guess...

I'm not completely convinced because there has been research lately which shows a link between smoking pot and schizophrenia:

Even if it's harmful, should the legal punishment be worse than any bad effects from the drug itself?

what are the long term health effects of smoking pot? worse than cigarettes? and remember, as soon as it is legalized, the tobacco industry will put the same addictive chemicals in that they do in regular cigarettes.

it should be legalized for a number of reasons. not just tax revenue. but think of the money saved in police raids not going after it. fines for driving while under the influence. and more. no jailing of potheads. the revenue savings are immense.

think of income taxes. legitimate farmers growing and selling.

however, i disagree with y'all on a major point. pot IS a gateway drug. but not for the reasons conventional law enforcement / policians state. it is a gateway drug because the guy selling it ALSO sells the harder nastier drugs. and hey... first sample is free baby! try a hit?

the real cost benefit of legalizing pot would be taking the profits from illegal pot growing, distribution, sales out of the pockets of organized drug cartels.

they use this money as venture capital for larger criminal enterprises.

just like prostitution, pot should be legal.

Just like prohibition, making something illegal does not stop people from doing it. I have been a Pot smoker for 30 years. I don't drink, anymore, and don't do or like any other drugs.

Now, excuse me. I need to up end the refrigerator into my mouth. MUNCHIES!!!!!!!!!
