I saw this video this morning and couldn't help thinking of that scene in Fargo. This is hilarious.

I hope I wasn't a turkey in a previous life, and that I'm not one in the next.

I don't know what was more horrifying. The turkey slaughter in the background or the jumbled rhetoric up front.

Is she on Helium?

I think she's on Helium...

I know that she is bulling here.

I know because I regularly spread bull at work and I recognise it when I see someone else doing it.

I just love the guy in the background checking into the camera every once in a while.

The guy shoving the turkey into the cone is the best part of the vid.

Notice how the first turkey sort of waves his poor turkey feet around.

This is like an SNL skit in real time.

As Alaska's chief executive, she could have pardoned those turkeys.

Too real. I count three turkeys though.

As an aspiring chef ....

I think it's important that folks know where their food comes from. If you think this is bad, you should read and/or see how cattle are processed - or chickens. Suffice to say it isn't pretty. This is mild compared to some of the other things you can see.

Chickens (the ones you buy in the store) are raised in little pens no more than a foot square. Often there are more than one chicken in this square. They're not allowed out, are fed until plump, shipped off to a processing plant (on trucks in cages one on top of the other - and yes, they're shitting all over each other), and then dispatched.

If you want to see cattle, watch the movie "Fast Food Nation." It's not a great movie, but at the end you get a feel for what happens in a beef packing plant. Again, it's not pretty.

Finally, I recommend Eric Schlosser's book "Fast Food Nation" for anyone who wants to know where their food comes from. He does an excellent job of chronicaling the beef industry, and every American should be concerned if what he says is true (based on my conversations with chefs here in Vermont, he's spot on).

EVERYBODY STOP!

Is it my imagination, or is Al TRAG going all gushy animal activist on us?

Well I'll be goddamned ....

I have read "Fast Food Nation," but thanks for the recommendation nonetheless.

Now Al, please read the next part of the comment very carefully.

First, get a steel pry bar of some kind and carefully remove the wooden box around your head.

Now then, everyone knows that turkeys get slaughtered. Everyone knows that lots and lots of turkeys get slaughtered. The point of the posting the vid was not to protest the slaughter of turkeys, but to showcase the utter, ongoing and unsolicited stupidity of Sarah Palin because no matter how you feel about turkey slaughter, conducting a television interview while a guy is grinding off turkey heads in a metal cone behind you IS A REALLY BAD IDEA.

Now, if it makes you feel any better, I understand that we all should have a little more respect for our burgers, that purchasing meat encased in sanitary plastic wrap has changed us. We all probably need to expose ourselves to the process that turns "moo" to "un-moo" in order to appreciate our place in the food chain.

That said, you are free to use this comment section to offer any opinions you'd like, but just know that I am also free to peck-peck-peck gobble-gobble-gobble at you.

Love,

Erin

What I want to know is the reason for grinding up turkey heads. Does somebody or some farm animal later get a little ground turkey head pie?

Al - are you doing the NECI thing?

I think we've all been duped. One day the actress that plays Palin will come clean and we'll all believe this kind of Wasila Borat scam was comic genius.

Erin,

No, I'm not becoming a "gushy animal activist." I just think, again as an aspiring chef that we know where our food comes from and how it's processed.

I agree that Governor Palin probably should not have allowed turkey slaughtering to go on in the background while she was interviewed. But maybe that's OK up in Alaska. I don't know ...

BTW, Schlosser is married to Robert Redford's daughter.

Finally, last I looked, I don't have a box on my head. In fact, I don't think I can recall ever having a box on my head. Some have suggested that I put one there given my visage, but it hasn't happened yet.

Harry - yes, I'm doing the NECI thing.

BTW, ever since all this turkey pardoning news hit, I been craving some pumpkin pie. With a little cinnamon and powdered sugar sprinkled on top. I like pie.
