Erin,
Since you are in such a battleground state, this might be helpful to readers:

That was well-written.
I think you are opting for the "join us on our journey to discover our racial identity"-trip. There is some validity to that.
I feel the need to be the voice of, "Watergate-Kicked-My-Idealism-In-the-Balls"/Generation Jones, here: I think most people are voting for Obama because of all the "toys" he is going to give us, like ethanol subsidies, pre-K, "free" health insurance, etc. (Or at least all the toys he THINKS he can give us, notwithstanding the $10.5-trillion deficit.)
I guess it is "progress" that we don't care what color our federal Santa Claus is, nowadays.
Thanks anon, I have seen that article before and even linked it in a post.
Zen, I love your "generation" description. As for Obama, I'm not counting on any Xmas gifts from him, but I am giving him my vote.
Guess I'll be the voice of "Vietnam turned on the light and Watergate made it brighter."
I'm voting for Obama because John McCain is a washed-up anti-terrorist and Sarah Palin is an idiot.

I love the way you write. I love the way your mind works. You have such a great way of combining your research, your personal thoughts, your objective observations....and then you mush it all together in a clever way that keeps me glued to the page.
This is another extremely great piece.
I was watching this PBS special on the energy crisis last night.
Bob Dole told T. Boone Pickens regarding ethanol, "There are 42 agricultural states and each have 2 senators. Figure it out." (That might not be the exact quote but it is really d@mned close...)
That got me thinking and this is not 100%, but Obama is in favor of ethanol subsidies; McCain is notoriously against.
If you look at an electoral college map, and ask yourself, "Do they grow ethanol there? there is a strong but I admit not 100% correlation.
I.e., McCain might take Nevada. Nevada = "no corn."
This doesn't work for Georgia, but we are retarded here and that's why we have low SAT scores, not a pot to piss in, the airport which is the main resource has two names, every street is named "Peachtree," etc. (I don't think most people realize you can make ethanol out of trees, also...)
It also doesn't work for Kansas and Nebraska--which detracts from my Bob Dole theory.
But other than that, there is a very strong correlation between "agricultural state" and "ethanol candidate."
My faulted theory also explains the "miraculous" victory of Obama in the Iowa primary, which was a "tribute to his powers of organization," blah blah blah.
sure am glad you became a writer though....
Erin, here's something both "scary and fun," just in time for Halloween. You can click on the door, windows, desk ... most anything. (now I have the shivers, though)
